3rd Annual Adelante Hombre Latino Youth Summit
More than 500 Latino students, almost all young men, from high schools and middle schools in the San Fernando Valley attended the 3rd Annual Adelante Hombre Latino Youth Summit at Panorama High School on Saturday, April 27, 2013
The Youth Summit organizers are concerned that in recent years fewer Latino young men than Latinas have enrolled in college. In 2010 about 567,000 Latino males were enrolled in four-year colleges compared to about 769,000 Latino females according to a report issued by the Pew Hispanic Center. Imelda Padilla, one of the Youth Summit organizers stated: “Too many of our young men are not fulfilling their potential. Our schools and community have to do better to support our young men.”
Raul Bocanegra, Assemblymember for the 39th district in the California Legislature, was the keynote speaker. Bocanegra, a San Fernando High School and UCLA graduate, encouraged the students to take advantage of the financial aid available for college tuition and not let anyone discourage them from achieving their goals. Bocanegra pointed out that his father continues to work as a gardener and set an example of doing your best at whatever you do. The Assemblymember stated: “ I am no different than you. If I, the son of a gardener, can graduate from UCLA so can you.” Also speaking to the students was San Fernando City councilmember Robert Gonzales who in November 2012 was elected to the council at the age of 29. Gonzales told the students: “All of you are leaders. All of you are intelligent and can make a contribution to improving your community.”
Students had an opportunity to attend workshops on a wide range of careers. All workshop presenters were Latino men many of whom attended local schools. Career workshops presented included: law, medicine, engineering, social work, law enforcement, firefighter, education, public service, emergency medical technician, graphic artist, small business entrepreneur, fire fighter and several others.
Georgette Montes de Oca, coordinator of special education at Panorama High School and a member of the organizing committee remarked: “Our hope is that our conference will help students realize that they too can attend college, graduate, enter a profession and become active community members.”
Youth Summit organizers are looking forward to the 4th Annual Adelante Hombre Latino Youth Summit.

Spanish Language Spelling Bee (Click Here for Newpaper Article)
In Azusa, California, it was an all-female final when the winner was crowned for the first-ever Spanish Spelling Bee at the Azusa Civic Auditorium on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Janelle Terelys Castellanos of St. Lucy's Priory High School took top honors over Jennifer Argueta of Panorama High School. The West Covina girl spelled "oceanografia" correctly to win.
Panorama student Jared Garcia came in third out of a field of 51 contenders from across the county.
Students had to spell words of varying degrees of difficulty in Spanish before a panel of 5 judges, who often had to confer over the answers before declaring them correct or incorrect.
The event was organized by the Azusa Pacific University chapter of Sigma Delta Pi.

THE BLUE+GOLD OPPORTUNITY PLAN (Click Here for Flyer)
The Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan is a UC financial aid program intended to expand access to the university for lower-income students by establishing a minimum level of grant aid for undergraduates with financial need and household incomes of less than $80,000.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• For California residents whose families earn less than $80,000 and who qualify for financial aid, the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan will fully cover UC’s systemwide tuition and fees. Qualified students must be in their first four years of attendance (first two for transfer students).
• The Blue and Gold program provides a minimum amount of grant money that students can receive. Students with sufficient financial need can qualify for even more grants to cover other educational expenses, such as room and board, books, and transportation. UC currently provides grant and scholarship assistance averaging $12,787 per student to more than half of undergraduates.
• The financial aid estimators available at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/paying-for-uc/financial-aid can give families a better idea of the total amount of financial aid they might expect to receive based on their unique circumstances.
HOW DO STUDENTS APPLY?
• Students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Cal Grant GPA Verification Form by March 2 of the year they plan to enter the university in order to qualify for the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan and to receive the highest possible financial aid award. No separate application is needed for the Blue and Gold plan; students will receive the benefits automatically if they qualify.
WHY DID UC CREATE THE BLUE AND GOLD OPPORTUNITY PLAN?
• Although the university already offers a robust financial aid program and enrolls more low-income students (more than a third of all undergraduates) than any other top research university, President Mark Yudof spearheaded this plan out of concern that UC needs to do more to convey a simple but powerful financial aid message that would encourage more low-income students to apply.
